Why are our pavements left to ruin ?

Has anyone else noticed how bad some pavements are now ? Left to decay , broken and dangerous Maybe a slight repair but hardly anything to praise I feel this is not just a local issue as I have been to other U.K. cities and it’s much the same Why is this ? Prob local Authority cuts etc but a dangerous eye sore I feel
