Self Checkout

Friend of mine has a son who’s been working at Publix for almost a year. Last week he was assigned self checkout. He was helping someone with a purchase when another customer banged some meat without scanning it. He did not see them because they were behind him. Because he didn’t catch it the store manager gave him 3 days off this week. He has picked up some extra days next week however. Question is how normal is it to give people time off without pay for customers stealing?
