Recommendations for an idiot

Hi, I am in desperate need of your best recommendations. A couple of years ago I bought a 2020 Corsa with 25k miles on the clock, because I thought I’d get a few years out of it with no bother. 5 break downs later and I’m ready to bin.

But I don’t have a clue where to go next. I’ve got about a 13k budget. I do about 8k miles a year, mainly short trips, no kids. I just want something that I can service and MOT every year and not worry about breakdowns, bloody wet belts or any of that shite.

I have rotten luck with cars and honestly think I’m having at least one mechanical (and mental) breakdown per year. What makes should I be looking at? Any help would be much appreciated!
