Just returned from bulgaria
A while ago I came here asking whether I should still go on my trip to Bulgaria and I’m glad to say I went. It ended up being one of the best trips I could have taken.
I was genuinely surprised by how well the metro works. It gets crowded, sure, but the price is fair and the stations are super different, with visible remnants of the Roman Empire. I was also impressed by the city’s architectural diversity. If I had skipped this trip, I definitely would’ve missed out on something special.
I highly recommend the Sofia Free Walking Tour and the Free Food Balkans Tour, they really complete the cultural immersion. Visiting the Women’s Market and Christmas Market was also super interesting, and going to the Rila Monastery added a unique touch to the whole experience. I was in the red flat too.
Overall, I felt relatively safe. I did notice a few odd looks here and there, probably because of my skin tone, but no one was directly disrespectful or aggressive toward me.
Before traveling, I read many comments saying Bulgaria was extremely cheap, but I think that’s becoming less true, especially with the country moving toward adopting the euro. Prices felt more moderate than “super cheap,” but still fair.
