How to increase sales on Instagram

I’ve seen a lot of people saying their sales and conversions take place in the DMs so I’ve recently started sending people a DM after they follow my company account offering them a discount, but I haven’t had any conversions from this. Do people view this as spam? Are there specific techniques to make this successful?

Thanks in advance!!
