“Thou shalt not call into the abyss, lest that which answereth be not the one whom thy seeketh.”

Necromancy is the art to communicate and utilise the debt, with an ultimate goal to bring the dead back alive.

Despite its idealistic nature, the practice itself is often faulty by amateur necromancers, and art itself is not without extreme risks not only endangering the user itself but also everything around them.

As “mudborns”, Most sentient species soul returned to the earth, and eventually the underworld, where the soul of the dead are guided by their own religions’ holy deity into the afterlife, where they inevitably are reborn.

The act of necromancy could be compared to a call, to target a soul and snatch it back from the flow of the void, then link it to the host body. However, often these specific “calls” would end up being turned into broadcast, as of a light at the bottom of of the ocean, as a shout within a foggy forest, a drop of stone into a calm lake, it ripples the abyss , it turn things into motion, it draws attentions , it causes thing to form and follow.

These abyss creatures are often originally formless, thoughtless , nameless, with no secular definition of “evil”, however this necromancy call breaks open the barrier between the land of the living and the void of the dead, and the former began to leak into the latter. Emotions, desires, conflicts, everything began to exemplify , magnify and exaggerate in the flow of the void, it causes shapes to form, moulding themselves to the often stronger negative emotions that sip out.

These abyss abomination would be naturally attracted to the of the call, seeking to break through the barriers between the living and the dead, this would cause catastrophic disasters, not that they are evil, but this is simply their nature, as if a magnet.

To stop this, in Servannian Confederation’s case, a knight , often of templar relations, would voluntarily undertake the theurgy process and to be possessed by a Weapon Saint, as human powers are no longer capable of stopping such creatures. He or she will drop into the abyss , hopefully before the beast reaches the land of the living, and destroy it, breaking it down into the abyssal “dust and energy” it once were, dismembering its form and cast it back down to where it belonged, and closing the link created by the necromancer’s call before more creature takes form and was attracted.

This process would also often kill the knights, as the power of the Saint would drain their life and strain their body to the limit.

Art by me, but extra credit to my Chinese friend
怪物蔬菜饼 who helped me designed the monster.

Why is necromancy forbidden in Servannia
