Methods to avoid paying tax by instalments in retirement with RRIF meltdown

Retirement

obviously lots of general ways (CPP/OAS withholding, RRIF withholding), but exactly how to withhold and when is the question, so you have as much in your pocket for as long as possible

bit new to the whole RRIF thing (1st year this year)

but my plan next year is

no OAS/CPP, but reasonable amount of NR div and realized CG
want to melt the RRSP anyway so will take more than the minimum (you can do the same if you only want to take minimum, just before you take out the last amount(s), estimate the tax and ask for that to be withheld)

take out the RRIF minimum during the year as needed (no tax withheld) this year I did monthly, next year will just do ad-hoc
then on say Dec 15: look at my Income/Div/CG and then estimate the tax using some online calculators (taxtips or just buy the Tax software early)
then take another RRIF payment (based on meltdown plan) and ask to withhold as much as needed (may even approach 100%) obviously allowing for the new withdraw in the calculations

do that at least 2 out of every 3 years, and since the tax was withheld (vs just a prepayment) you won't have to pay by instalments (assuming you did the math right and won't owe > 3000 when you file, I expect I will overpay the tax on this RRIF payment to ensure I get a small refund)
then the other year you don't care about prepaying tax and pay whatever you owe on Apr 30 since you need to owe > 3k for 2 out of 3 years for instalments

obviously when CPP/OAS come along do the same just adding those in to the mix (depending on numbers may ask for some of that to be withheld, but I'd rather get it all and just pay on this late RRIF withdrawal)

I look at this as the usual tax year end planning (tax loss selling, tax gain crystallizing, RRIF excess meltdown/tax-withholding) to get income to the right level each year, and now along with that is just this extra bit of how much send to cRA

this way you only pay 2 effective tax withholding and its reasonably close to your filing via this RRIF payment withholding every 3 years vs 12 via instalments

or just do it every year which is probably the way I will do it, since maybe some years you need to do a massive CG and you just can't pay enough withholding
