Looking for opinions about switching banks, is this the right situation?
I’m currently with RBC (have been since I was 14) but I’m frustrated with some inconsistencies with overdraft protection and I’m considering switching to Scotiabank mainly because of the scene points, but they also have 2 options for overdraft protection ($5 per month or $5 per instance) and I only see one option on the RBC website ($5 a month).
Some context:
I regularly transfer money to a savings account not accessible by my bank card for automatic payments that come out of my chequing account and unfortunately I often (less than once a month on average, but too often in my opinion) forget to transfer it back before the 6pm deadline for the payment to come out 🤦🏻♀️ and (here’s where the inconsistency is) I can never know if I’m getting his with an NSF fee or an overdraft handling fee. In 2024, I was charged one NSF fee which was rebated due to the type of account I have, and 8 overdraft handling fees. In 2025 I’ve had 6 NSF charges (one rebated) and 2 overdraft handling fees. My car payment or car/tenant insurance is usually the victim and I need to get this sorted out.
Is switching banks the solution? I’m just really frustrated because the money is always there, it’s just in another account and I would rather pay $5 every time I forgot or got sidetracked and missed the deadline, rather than $45 😳
