background: 10 days ago my 8 year old pitbull mutt got a biopsy done of two growths.One on her ear which was benign and has healed beautifully. Another one on her chest which was benign as well but is causing us trouble healing wise. She’s untrained and pulls like crazy when on leash which is its own uphill battle. So, surprising to no one, she popped her initial stitches 3 days after they were done, she popped 3 of 4 stitches in one foul swoop. We rushed to the emergency vet when we noticed and they did 3 staples, we’ve been applying antibiotic cream they gave us every 12 hours since that visit. Couple days later she popped her final stitch and I just pulled it out (with gloved hands) since it was not holding anything together and skin beneath the stitch looked completely unaffected by the biopsy. Today, we got her ear stitches and chest staples removed, the tech said she looks great and we all saw a white line beneath the staples once they were gone. We reminisced with the tech about how insane she went when waking up from the anesthesia then took her to mcdonald’s for a reward since she was so good… We got home, not even 15 minutes later, gave her a couple delicious nuggies and noticed that small white scar we ALL saw (Me, my mom, vet tech, receptionist) turned into a red open wound with a little blood on her bandana.  Emailed vet the attached photo and brought her back in at their request, our veterinary surgeon looked at it and spoke to us. She said, in person she can tell that the granulation looks great and is healing properly so, she suggested we do open wound care instead of risking sedation and new stitches. After the 1000$ we spent the first 3 vet trips for this non-issue, we’d rather not spend another 700 for something that may not even work. Vet said she and we would prefer going with open wound care and we agreed. They said it will take longer to fully heal and we’ll need to keep area clean and dry. We have a light cotton bandana on her, loosely, and will continue applying antibiotic cream every 12 hours. Limited trips outside and collar off once inside.
I’m really just wondering if there’s any specific advice y’all have, experiences with open wound care/biopsy wound care, or concerns we should look out for during healing to ensure it’s going well. Sorry for long post, thanks in advice 🙏
