Looking for an upgrade

As the title says, I’m looking to upgrade my main kitchen knife. Right now I’ve got a couple of Victorinox 8" chefs and some Schmidt Bros. stuff (6" and 8" chefs, petty, paring). The Schmidt Bros. set was a wedding gift… would not recommend.

I’ve got solid knife skills—taken a few classes, cook a lot, and feel pretty comfortable for a home cook—so I’m thinking it might be time for an upgrade. I’m considering asking for one as a Christmas gift, so I’d like to keep the budget around $100. Not sure if that’s enough to make the jump worth it or if I should just hold off.

I’m open to non-chef’s knives or trying a gyuto. Prefer stainless since my wife will be using it too and it likely won’t get the same level of care I’d give it.
