What was Hyman Roth sick with? Was he likely going to die and if so why didn't Michael just wait till he did?

I don't know if it's ever mentioned what he had. I remember the scene where Tom said his illness is terminal and Michael thought the opposite where he was going to live forever. You could tell Roth was sick but it sounded like Michael needed to get rid of him asap.
