Just watched this movie, and I'm upset

Opinion

My little nephew was visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday and insisted on watching this movie. I haven't seen it before, but I ended up getting sucked into it and watching it. It was a good movie, but honestly I am upset about how they handled Mirabel's character. I get that she's supposed to be the "powers don't make you special" character, but that was kind of traumatic.

First off, she is the only one who doesn't have a power. I get that. Powers aren't everything. It's for the plot or whatever that she has to be different to save the family. But the scene where she goes up to her door as a little kid all excited and hopeful and innocent and it just crumbles to dust like she was a total loser was brutal. Having to grow up as the one kid who didn't get a power, and then to see Antonio come up next and get a super awesome power to talk to animals, ouch. It's like rubbing salt in the wound. It's like - why did they have to traumatize her so terribly like that? Why couldn't she have just gotten a power that didn't seem to be useful or something, instead of getting nothing?

And then the ending - that hurt even further. She went through her whole saving the family storyline, and everyone had gotten their powers back. You'd think that now, after all she did and how much she helped, she was going to be given her true power, like some kind of magic. But no, she gets to watch everyone else have their magic back while she still sits off to the side not able to do anything and not having anything special to her. And that super sucks.

And again, I get that whole "magic isn't what makes you special" message. But still, to grow up her whole life being different and not having a power, and going through all of that and still not getting a power. Not even getting the chance to have a power and turning it down. And then watching everyone else get their power back - that's harsh.

I think a better ending to the movie would have been that nobody had gotten their powers back, and they all learned to live as a family without them - that would be a good ending I think. Or at least give her some kind of power at the end, so she didn't feel so left out. It's like, I get that she doesn't NEED a power, but she definitely deserves to have one. And I feel like no matter how much she's told she's special the way she is, Mirabel is always going to be wishing she had some kind of power.

I don't know how to put it into words, but I can imagine Mirabel is reminded every time that her siblings or cousins use their powers, that she doesn't have any special ability. And that seems very frustrating, even with the love and respect from others. It doesn't change the fact that they can all do something magical and she is still unable to by no fault of her own.
