Haven’t finished a multiplayer game

I’d say 90% of the time I don’t get past the ready up screen in multiplayer, seems like people just disappear right before the countdown ends? I’ve lost the 3 I did get a match for due to disconnection on the other side. I’m new, so I’m wondering if I’m missing something or if the player base is just toxic and I should stick to single player?
