General financial literacy questions and concerns?
Hi, I feel like this is kind of lots of questions compiled into one post so I may cross-post on some other sub Reddits. Basically I'm trying to navigate a financial situation that I was not expecting to be in, and want some insight on next steps. Basically, my mom (f58) inherited a decent amount of money into a designated beneficiary account from my grandmother after she had passed. She told me (f23) that this is "our" money and seems to be treating it that way. The problem is that we have a complicated relationship, and my mom drinks quite heavily and is not very interested in understanding where or how this money is invested.
Our household grew up very poor, and she had only received this money after my dad had passed, who was much more financially literate, albeit not very responsible with money. Because of my dad being a news junkie, I inherited that trait and end up consuming a lot of news surrounding the economy and financial planning.
I want to be more knowledgeable surrounding topics like these, but my mom is completely uninterested in understanding or learning anything about how the money in this account operates. She's been unemployed for around a year since she had received this money, and lives very inexpensively as a result of her addiction I guess?
recently, I've been seeing alot of news surrounding the AI bubble and an inevitable recession and I'm really worried about how to navigate these situations with my mom. We've really struggled our whole life and having some financial stability has been a nice cushion we've both never had before. I'm just terrified about the current state of the world and how to handle this. It's me and her, and I have no siblings or really any other individuals in my family who would know how to handle this.
I guess I just wanted some feedback on how to handle something like this, or if anyone could recommend some tools or have been in a similar situation.
