I actually love "Diary of a Lovesong "...
I remember the earliest A Perfect Circle Live recordings that began to surface in 1999. As a massive Tool fan I couldn't wait to hear what the band sounded like. I was surprised by how pretty, but 80's mixed with alternative, heavy rock was kind of the vibe. The recordings weren't great quality. However I definitely remember "Diary of a Lovesong" (not sure it was called that back then) but the totally metal riffs, then that unmistakable bassline. The Cure has some of THE best basslines ever written, I'm 100% serious. Most times basslines follow the guitar parts, not always so in The Cure though. Although it wasn't til the A Perfect Circle live boxset (A Perfect Circle Live: featuring Stone and Echo) that you could really appreciate it. Billy can get pretty metal when he wants to, but this recording of it is great! In fact I love this whole boxset, though the band was playing much cooler versions of some songs back in 2001-04.
