Ugh, someone is talking about the Rocket Pods again

Balance Change Mondays

I took it out on a couple of missions to see what it's like as I'm level 90 and have never really tried it. This is not news, but it suuuuuuucks. I know some skilled Divers can do good things with it, but that's because of their skill, not because of the stratagem itself.

Eagle-1 is bae and I prefer almost all of the Eagle stratagems to the orbitals. In my understanding, you patch an item if a) it doesn't function as intended, or b) it negatively affects gameplay or player experience. So I just kind of feel bad for this stratagem because I think it's so far from what it's intended to be, and so far from what makes sense for rocket pods given what else Eagle-1 can do.

Let's talk damage numbers based on the wiki:

EagleMunitions per call inKinetic damage per (durable in brackets)Total kinetic damageExplosive damage per munitionExplosive outer radiusTotal explosive damage
Airstrike61500(1500)9000(9000)80010m4800
Strafing run30? (estimate)350(200)10500(6000)3505m10500
Rocket pods6600(600)3600(3600)2005m1200

In total, maximum theoretical damage output for the airstrike is 13800, strafing run is 21000, the rocket pods do 4800.

From the perspective of making the stratagem numbers reflect what it's supposed to be, it just doesn't make sense that a) an explosive rocket at 110mm does less than double the damage of a 23mm shell and b) said rocket does less explosive damage in the same radius.

From the perspective of munitions count, this also doesn't make sense to me. Strafing run go brrrrrrt that makes sense. Bombs saturate an area, that makes sense. But to my non-real life experience and limited research, a rocket pod usually replaces a bomb or group of missiles. If an upgraded eagle can carry 18 bombs, it should be able carry dozens of rockets.

I get that the rocket pods are supposed to be targeted like the orbital rail strike, but I don't really see that happening very much. They certainly don't target warp ships or overseers.

The crux of what I'm getting at, is not that I feel entitled to a better stratagem, it's that I just feel kind of bad that this stratagem feels so far out of sync for what it's intended to be. Were I to fix it (and nobody asked, but I'm saying it anyway), it would be more like a small area of saturation of maybe a dozen or more rockets with more explosive damage. Still targeting the biggest unit, but functioning more like a short orbital gatling barrage. I would think that a single barrage should be able to drop shields on a warp ship and crack it open. Maybe a lucky shot on a harvester too. The airstrike is a "fuck this area over there" and the the strafing run is a "fuck those guys." The 110 rockets should be "fuck this spot any anything standing on it."

Anyway, thanks for your eyes, Helldivers o7
