List Of Alchemist Fixes Needed?

5e (2024)

Hey everyone.

I was really stpked to play an updated alchemist, and while this updated version is far from perfect, I still think it can be tweaked to make ot perfectly playable. This is by no means a defense of WoTC. I too am getting tired of their unbalanced content.

So here is my list of changes I would personally apply to the Alchemist subclass

  1. Firstly, get rid of the forced randomness when brewing the elixirs. Instead, have the randomness be a buy-in. Let the alchemist choose between Option A: Choose the effect, and have it be between any of the 5 effects when brewing them, or B: Roll on the table, and if you roll a 6 the potion becomes a "Wild" elixir. When you drink it, you have to roll on the Wild Magic table to determine the effect.

  2. When using spell slots to brew an elixir, the amount of elixirs you brew is equal to the level of the slot. I don't get why the designers want you to get only one after using ANY slot.

  3. Alchemists spell list is fine bar one spell: Gaseous Form. This is supposed to be the spell that Alchemists get to exclusivelt use at Level 11 SSI, but I dont get this spell. Why is an alchemist turning themself into a mist? In fact, STINKING CLOUD WAS RIGHT THERE! So I propose that Gaseous Form should be swapped out with Stinking Cloud. A better spell thematically. I understand that Stinking Cloud is a Concentratiom spell, but given that I can lob a stink bomb 10 times at my enemies to disable their action economy, I think this would have been the best 3rd Level spell for the Alchemist and still give it a unique one to work with! Plus, it will synergize with your 15th level feature where you can be in the middle of the Stinking Cloud and not be affected.

  4. The 9th Level Feature (Restorative Reagents) should once again add the feature back that gives Temp HP after drinking an elixir. Whoever removed this should get a wet finger in their ear.

As for the rest of the Alchemist, I actually adore every other feature. Let me know what you think in the poll below!
