do you answer a sd when he ask how much allowance you want?

Hi new SB here, testing the waters a pot told me he is okay with an allowance, i.e "if we decided an arrangment is good, would an allowance be okay with you?" but asks me how much I want I am scared if I am upfront it will make it feel transactional and/or it will be out of his budget !
