What to do when you receive an IRS bank levy notice
If you just got an IRS bank levy notice, here’s what to do next (from a licensed tax-relief team that handles these daily)
A bank levy notice is one of the most stressful letters someone can receive from the IRS.
We see this happen to good people every single day — and the first thing we want you to know is: you’re not out of options.
Larson Tax Relief has been helping individuals and businesses resolve IRS levies for two decades. Here’s the same guidance we give our own clients the moment a levy notice arrives:
1. Don’t panic — a levy is serious, but it’s not the end
A levy doesn’t mean the IRS has already taken your money.
It means they intend to, and you usually have a short window where action makes a huge difference.
2. Read the notice carefully
Most levy notices provide:
- A deadline
- The tax years involved
- The amount owed
- Instructions on how to respond
If anything looks confusing, it’s normal — these notices aren’t written in plain English.
3. File missing returns before doing anything else
In the majority of levy cases we handle, the person has one or more unfiled returns.
The IRS won’t negotiate relief until everything is filed — and many people discover they actually owe less than they feared once real numbers are calculated.
4. Contact the IRS before they take the next step
Calling the IRS doesn’t make things worse.
In fact, proactive communication can stop enforced collection.
When we step in for clients, one of the first things we do is call the IRS on their behalf to request a pause so we can get returns filed and negotiate a resolution.
5. Know the actual IRS relief paths
These are the programs the IRS really offers:
- Payment plans
- Currently Not Collectible status
- Penalty relief
- Offer in Compromise (only for qualifying hardship cases)
- Business payroll tax resolutions
None of these are “magic” programs, but they are real, and we use them every day for people in tough situations.
