[RF] “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu
Andrew sat at his desk, staring blankly at the presentation that had consumed most of his day. The glow of the office light had long become his home beacon, and the gray walls of the office felt somehow heavier than usual. Maybe frustration, maybe a sudden surge of uncertainty, pulled him from his seat. He had dreams once — of travel and photography, of capturing the beauty surrounding him. But those dreams had been shelved, replaced by routine, self-doubt, and endless gray walls.
Instead of joining his coworkers during his lunch break, he walked to the park across the street, hoping to clear his mind. A small child caught his attention: she was taking wobbly steps toward her mother, maybe her first, each movement hesitant but determined. There was something pure and brave in her effort — a reminder of what it meant to begin.
He returned to the office, feeling a flicker of courage. He didn’t quit his job or buy a plane ticket. He simply walked outside after work, breathing in the warm evening air, slowly rediscovering his surroundings. He noticed the smell of fresh bread from the corner bakery, the laughter of a passerby, the reddened clouds moving slowly above him.
That night, Andrew rifled through his closet, looking for his camera, a gift he had received from his grandmother. While checking the old memory card, that bright smile suddenly shone back at him. “Oh, you better capture my sweet spot,” she had joked while wearing her Sunday best. It had been his graduation day, marking the start of his bright career. Andrew laughed softly, thinking about how his bright future had turned out to be gray.
Unable to let go, from then on he carried the camera around with him, capturing trees, birds, even Mr. Jenkins’ cat. Weeks later, he found himself enrolling in a weekend photography class he had always dreamed of attending. As he walked past the park again, he smiled, remembering the child he had seen. Now he was the one moving toward a new direction.
