Ending a contract with a shady car dealership

Contracts

Location: Texas, USA

Being young, not knowing much about the systems and being influenced by other people who have made poor choices, I mistakenly signed a contract with a shitty car dealership who literally acts like some old timey loan shark.

Being fully honest, I have made two late payments the entire contract (I’ve had it around 8 months) and struggle affording my insurance for the car. Every other payment has been made on time and I try my best to communicate with them about any late or partial payments.

I had a payment due the day before Thanksgiving and they were closed for about 4 days, making it impossible to pay. My checks are cash so I have to put money on my card to call in the payment but the stores were also closed due to the holidays.

Without letting me know, the dealership turned my car off on Friday leaving me unable to get to a store to put the cash on my card for the payment. I contacted them Saturday and let them know I’d be able to pay them Monday because that was the only available time I had to make the trip as I was traveling and super busy for the holiday.

Monday I was also supposed to start training for a new job which I ended up having to cancel because they had turned off my car two days prior without notice. I’m aware they aren’t legally obligated to disclose an immobilizer and they do not have to let me know if they decide to turn the car off but it would have been appreciated.

They’ve constantly given me problems and lots of attitude any time I contact them so I’ve decided that I’d rather find a new car with a better dealership and I’d like to just return the car and end the contract. Is that possible? Is there any way that could help me do that? Will I still have to pay the remaining balance if someone else decides to pick up the payments on the car?

This is a used car dealership so they’ll just take the car, make sure it’s good to run, and put it back on the lot to sell. Again, they’re very shady and likely don’t do everything 100% legally. I need help.

TIA!
