The D&D stuff in season 5 seems a bit... shoehorned.

Discussion

I don't mind Mike & co. no longer playing D&D as of season 5, given how much they have on their plates, but the show can't stop trying to shoehorn D&D into character interactions.

At some point, one of the four (I forget which) shows his miniature to a kid in a very infantilizing pep-talk about courage: "When I'm scared, I become this guy, who isn't scared of anything", like the kid is afraid of a spider in the bathtub. Given all they've been through and all they've lost, I feel the characters would not so insultingly dismiss someone's fears.

Later, Mike grabs some D&D miniatures as props to explain an idea to the others, including adults: "This is Vecna, and this is you" and so on. Except it's a super straightforward explanation that requires no visual aid of any sort.

It just feels very forced. At this point, the show should just acknowledge that the kids are kind of over D&D. They're soldiers in a war, not adventurers on a quest. They're far beyond the point where a roleplaying game could be useful as either a coping mechanism or a metaphor.
