Essential XL HD wireless range worse than older models?

I bought a 3 pack of Essential XL Outdoor HD (VMC2052) to replace our Essential Outdoor HD (VMC2050) since it was a great deal. I swapped out the one on our garage and one in the back off the deck and apparently the range is too far even though it is the exact spot the older ones were. They work in the house just fine but as soon as I get a short distance from the house they will not connect and work. Everything is all up to date and I have also tried removing them and going through the re-adding process.

Anyone else have wireless issues with these or have any ideas what could be the issue? I might just have to send them back.
