Fingernail fungal infection - any experiences?
I have a long and mostly boring story to tell about a thumb injury - but in short, I slammed it in a door, my nail fell off, and a new one has mostly grown back, but it is a bit mangled and is suddenly showing signs of an infection.
I spoke to two doctors at my GP surgery today who said it's most likely fungal, but they can't know for sure until it's grown out enough to get a clipping, and even then if it is confirmed, there's not much they can do as most treatments aren't safe for pregnancy. But they didn't know much about the specifics or relative risks of letting an infection go unchecked. They said it's a difficult situation because no doctor is an expert in skin problems AND pregnancy. So I'm left trying to figure out the next best steps myself.
They said if it's fungal I'll probably just have to wait and start treating it once baby is here, but I'm really not keen on the idea of letting it get worse and then having an active fungal infection on my hand while I have a newborn baby. The doctor said it wouldn't be contagious, but when I google it, the entire internet seems to disagree with her... However most resources are about toenails, so maybe it's different.
It's a long shot, but has anyone navigated a fungal infection during pregnancy or after? What advice did you get and how did it turn out? Grateful for any info!
