Love bombing - how it’s used to control you

Resources You May Find Helpful

Love bombing is an intense, rapid flood of affection, praise, gifts, and promises early in a relationship to make the target feel like they’ve found their perfect soulmate.

It’s a deliberate manipulation tactic used by abusers (especially narcissists) in a three-phase cycle:

  1. Idealization – Overwhelming love and attention; target becomes emotionally addicted.

  2. Devaluation – Affection is suddenly withdrawn; target is criticized and made to feel worthless.

  3. Control – Intermittent small doses of affection keep the target chasing the original high, doing anything to please the abuser.

This creates trauma bonding and dependency. The victim is isolated, gaslit, and trapped by guilt, sunk costs, and the belief no one else will ever love them this much.

Red flags: too much too fast, constant contact, pressure for quick commitment, isolation from friends/family, extravagant future promises after knowing you only weeks.

In short: Love bombing isn’t love—it’s the hook that makes later abuse possible and escape feel impossible.
