My One Disappointment with the Kaiju Renaissance Era So Far...
If I have one disappointment with the Kaiju Renaissance we've enjoyed since 2013, it's that even though we've gotten some new original movies and shows outside the genre's Big 5 (Godzilla, Ultraman, Mothra, King Kong, and Gamera) there really still hasn't been any that have broken out or really seem like they'll have real staying power. Probably the closest we've gotten so far have been Pacific Rim, Attack on Titan, and Kaiju No. 8 but... I mean, I feel like Pacific Rim and Attack on Titan have already largely faded, and I have doubts about Kaiju No. 8's staying power. Rampage, sadly, never got a sequel. Colossal never really became anything more. Troll was fun, but I'm hearing Troll 2 is disappointing so that may be it for that (and it's, sadly, still fairly obscure despite being given some spotlight by Netflix).
There have been some breakout new characters, but all of them have so far been apart of the Big Five's larger supporting cast (the MUTOs, Skullcrawlers, Shimo, and Emi in particular seem to be really popular). I guess it's possible one of them could eventually be spun off and given their own thing -- Emi/Gigantron seem like great candidates for that, I feel like a series built just around them would work and be well received.
I dunno... I guess I just had hope there'd be some new breakout star who'd lead a series of their own outside the MonsterVerse, Ultra franchise, or whatever Gamera's doing.
