What do you think of MBTI personality typing?
The MBTI Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and its cognitive functions theory are a pseudoscience that categorizes people into 16 categories. There is no scientific evidence that backs up MBTI except from philosophical analysis (Carl Jung). It is a misinterpretation that these 16 personalities are harsh boxes in which people’s personality presents itself. It is rather a cognitive foundation of how one’s personality will unfold.
Although this is not backed up by science, people find comfort and acknowledgement in it. I believe the MBTI theory has some overarching truths to it which need to be broken down by neurological research, although research would most likely rephrase the entire theory again. I see MBTI as a starting point for a new branch of personality research.
Do you think it is legitimate for people to identify themselves with MBTI personality types or would you discourage it?
