Why is your elf naughty?

I see different creative ideas. Though half of them are naughty. My son 6 has heard from friends about their naughty elves and doesn’t understand. And neither do I. Aren’t they supposed to be kind and helpful?is this a thing for older kids who don’t believe but still enjoy?
