Welcome to r/Vielight | Research Hub for Brain Photobiomodulation (PBM)
Hey everyone,
Welcome to r/Vielight – a community focused on brain photobiomodulation (PBM) and the science behind Vielight’s technology.
This subreddit is for:
- Sharing & discussing published research using Vielight devices
- Talking about mechanisms (brain networks, mitochondria, CSF flow, immunity, etc.)
- Comparing protocols, methodologies, and outcomes (NOT giving personal medical advice)
- Connecting researchers, clinicians, and curious users
1. Where to find Vielight research
Vielight maintains a public research hub here:
👉 Vielight Research Portal: https://www.vielight.com/research/
On that page you can:
- Filter by condition – Alzheimer’s / dementia, TBI, Parkinson’s, MCI, creativity, autism, viral immunity, long COVID, PTSD, etc.
- Filter by status – completed, in progress, recruiting
- Click through to full-text papers, PubMed entries, and summaries
Current statistics:
- 25+ published research studies
- 800+ clinical research participants
- 3 medical device licenses
Guided by a deep commitment to collaboration, we work alongside leading researchers and clinicians worldwide. Our core team brings together neuroscientists, medical doctors and photonics engineers, blending scientific rigor with engineering innovation.
2. Highlight reel: some key Vielight studies
Here are a few landmark studies you’ll see on the research page (very simplified summaries):
🧠 Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – network efficiency & cognition
- Cerebellar network efficiency (n=30, fMRI) – University of Utah / UCLA / Mount Sinai
- Intranasal + transcranial PBM (“itPBM”) with the Neuro Gamma improved cerebellar network efficiency on fMRI in people with TBI-related issues. Vielight
- Objective cognitive improvements (n=44) – University of Utah & Mount Sinai
- One of the largest published TBI PBM trials with significant gains on cognitive tests after a multi-week Neuro Gamma intervention at home. Vielight
- Neuromuscular control & balance (n=43)
- TBI/RHAE participants showed better reaction time, grip strength, and balance after 8–10 weeks of Neuro Gamma treatment. Vielight
💧 Brain fluid dynamics & intranasal efficiency
- CSF / brain fluid dynamics (n=45, MRI) – Baycrest Hospital
- Compared forehead transcranial PBM vs intranasal PBM in healthy young adults using MRI.
- Result: intranasal PBM showed more efficient modulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics, highlighting the efficiency of the intranasal route – a core part of Vielight’s patented designs. Vielight
🧩 Alzheimer's / Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
- MCI trial (n=14) – University of Toronto & St. Michael’s Hospital
- 6 weeks of intranasal + transcranial PBM led to improvements in cognitive scores, brain connectivity, mitochondrial markers, and blood biomarkers related to Alzheimer’s risk. Vielight
- University of California independent dementia trial (summarized in the Vielight blog)
- Device: Vielight Neuro Gamma (810 nm, 40 Hz) targeting Default Mode Network (DMN) nodes plus intranasal.
- 12-week home PBM vs usual care in people with dementia.
- Outcomes reported in the blog and paper:
- Improvements in ADAS-cog (cognition) and Neuropsychiatric Inventory scores (behavioral symptoms). Vielight Inc
- Increased cerebral perfusion and improved DMN connectivity on MRI in the PBM group vs usual care. Vielight Inc
🧬 Parkinson’s disease
- Parkinson’s study (n=14) – University of Sydney
- Idiopathic Parkinson’s patients using the Neuro Gamma saw improvements in mobility, motor function, balance, and cognition after 12 weeks, with benefits persisting up to a year with continued home use; no significant side effects reported. Vielight
😷 Viral recovery & immunity (COVID-19)
- Phase 3 trial (n=294) – RX-Plus device
- The largest successful PBM clinical trial ever published in any indication.
- Adults with moderate–severe COVID-19 (0–7 days of symptoms) had faster recovery and reduced respiratory and systemic symptoms when treated with the RX-Plus, likely via cytokine modulation. Vielight
🎨 Creativity, Autism, PTSD, and more
You’ll also find:
- Creativity / Default Mode Network study (n=58) – increased divergent thinking and originality with Neuro Gamma stimulation of DMN regions. Vielight
- Autism (n=21) – children with ASD using the Neuro Duo (Alpha + Gamma protocols) showed reductions in ASD severity, noncompliant behavior, parental stress, and cognitive rigidity, with better attention and sleep. Vielight
- PTSD / firefighters (n=14) – itPBM with the Neuro Alpha in firefighters aimed at inflammation and network function, reporting symptom and cognition benefits. Vielight
3. Why Vielight is (arguably) best-positioned in brain PBM
A few reasons why many people consider Vielight to be uniquely positioned in the brain PBM space:
- Inventors of brain photobiomodulation & patented tech
- Vielight pioneered intranasal + transcranial PBM for the brain and holds multiple international and US patents in this area. Vielight
- Depth of published research
- Dozens of published studies across TBI, Parkinson’s, MCI, Alzheimer’s risk, creativity, autism, PTSD, viral immunity, long COVID, and more – often with rigorous endpoints (fMRI, qEEG, cognitive batteries, biomarkers).
- Top-tier collaborators
- Trials with institutions like Harvard Medical School, Boston University, University of Sydney, University of Toronto, Mount Sinai, Baycrest, University of Utah, University of Johannesburg, and others.
- Regulatory traction
- Multiple medical device licenses (e.g., for the RX-Plus COVID trial) and ongoing clinical programs in neurological and systemic indications.
- Emerging AI & analytics ecosystem
- The company is now building out AI-supported neurotechnology (see “Vie-AI” on the site) to pair PBM interventions with advanced neuro data analysis and clinical decision-support tools. Vielight
