First-Time Builder | Need Help Choosing a $1000–$1300 CAD Gaming/Editing PC (Build or Prebuilt?)

CAD / $800-1000

Hey everyone!

I’m trying to figure out whether I should build my first PC or buy a prebuilt within a $1000–$1300 CAD budget. This is literally my first time stepping into the PC world, so any advice is appreciated

Location / Budget / What I’ll Use It For • Location: Canada (no Micro Center here, closest one across the border is 5+ hours away 🙃) • Budget: $1000–$1300 CAD • Use cases: • Quantitative & qualitative research programs • Photo/video editing • Gaming (CoD, Elden Ring, Valorant, Forza, Helldivers, etc.) • General everyday use

Already own: • Monitor • Mouse • Keyboard

What I’m Looking For

I don’t need some wild RTX 5090Ti setup lol, but I do want: • 16GB RAM (totally fine for me right now) • At least 1TB SSD storage minimum • Solid 1080p (or maybe even 1440p) performance • Something easily upgradable later (GPU/CPU/RAM/storage) • A build where I can swap the case in the future

Case Preference — Fractal North

I really love the Fractal North case, but prebuilts that use it are either impossible to find in Canada or extremely overpriced.

I’m okay with: • Starting in a cheaper case now and moving everything into a Fractal North later OR • Building directly in a Fractal North if it still fits the budget

What I Need Help With • Should I build at this price point or go prebuilt in Canada? • If building: • Any PCPartPicker lists that fit my $1000–$1300 CAD budget with 16GB RAM + 1TB SSD? • If prebuilts: • Recommendations for Canadian retailers or specific models that aren’t a total rip-off • Tips for a first-time builder: • Motherboards to look for • Good PSU wattage for future GPU upgrades • Cooling recommendations • General “don’t mess this up” advice lmao

⸻

TL;DR:

$1000–$1300 CAD budget, first-time builder. Need a PC for gaming, editing, research software, and general use. Want 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD minimum, and good upgradeability. Preferably want to end up in a Fractal North case eventually. Looking for help choosing between building vs prebuilt, plus any part lists or recommendations.

Thanks in advance!! And all advice is welcome :)
