My career feels dead, my home feels wrong - but leaving feels impossible

General Advice

I’ll try and keep this as short as possible - I am a 31 year old single male, I work for a small company and I’m at the top of the business in terms of position. I basically run the company now, and the owners of the business plan to gift me part ownership in order for me to stay. They pay me an above average wage, and I have more flexibility with my job than I would have anywhere else (e.g most people in my career have to work weekends whereas I only work half a day on Saturday as/when I want too, I get to bring my dog to work, my holiday isn’t a regimented amount of days etc) But I still don’t feel 100% satisfaction or settlement in my job. I don’t mean to say arrogant when I say this, but the company is 100% dependant on me and the place would fall apart if I left - so I deal with a lot of pressure, and can’t help but feel an element of guilt at the thought of leaving. I wish the company wasn’t so dependant on me to be honest.

The area I live, and the area I work (just outside London in the UK) are priced far above the market average for houses, so I still live with parents. Even though I am paid a good wage, getting a mortgage on a basic property is an incredible stretch, and would mean limiting doing the very few things I enjoy in life. The only reason I would live where I currently live are to be near work, and family. If my family disappeared tomorrow, and my job ended in my current workplace there is 0% chance I would choose to live where I am. As I get older, I hate where I live more and more, and resent the fact it costs so much money to live somewhere I don’t even want to be.

I have been single for five years now, I don’t have a social life and don’t often meet new people. I can’t help but think if I met a significant other tomorrow, and the pressure of affording living and buying a house on my own was relieved, I would feel so much better about life. But - I can’t live my life hoping that happens, we aren’t all guaranteed to meet someone. I haven’t been on a date in two years, and I am below ‘average’ attractiveness. So I can’t plan my whole life around potentially meeting someone, when it may never happen.

There are areas in the UK I absolutely love - Wales, Scotland, the Lake District. But moving to these places would mean being hundreds of miles from family, life long friends, and giving up a well paid job with the promise of being gifted part ownership of a company - stupid ? Possibly. I have no idea what I would do for work if I moved to one of those places, I would never be as lucky as I currently am, I’d have no one to fall back on, and no one to look after my dog when I was at work all day (again, I’m lucky enough to be able to take my dog to work currently) I love the outdoors, hiking with my dog, and being around nature - I hate cities. I holiday to these three places often as I just love being in the Lake District/Wales/Scotland.

Honestly, my absolute dream would be to find a work from home job that pays a good salary, and go and move to somewhere I love and head out hiking and camping with my dog on the weekends. My current job is not possible to be a ‘work from home’ / work remotely job as it is client facing. So to do this would mean a change of career and starting from the bottom again, which obviously means taking a big hit with a lower salary.

So between my job, housing un-affordability, lack of love life, I’m just feeling like I’ve hit a dead end. The longer I leave it, the more pressure I feel building, and I worry that if I stay in my current situation I will eventually look back on my life as a waste of time - sat still and not doing anything about it. But I don’t know what I should do or can do to change that…

For you reading this - I feel like the answer seems easy “if you don’t want to be where you are, move” but for someone who loves their family & friends and still lives in their childhood home, that feels scary, especially when giving up a role in a company a lot of people would work their whole lives towards. It doesn’t mean it’s right for me just because I have it, but I feel like it would also be stupid to throw away. Help!
