Random GPU crashes on some games (GTX 980 Ti) – need help diagnosing

NVIDIA 9xx

Hi everyone,

I have a GTX 980 Ti and I’m experiencing random crashes in some games.
Sometimes it’s a freeze and return to the desktop, sometimes a long freeze while the monitor loses signal, and occasionally a blue/grey screen.

Here are some stats when gaming (Watch Dogs 2 and War Thunder):

  • GPU usage: ~90%
  • CPU usage: ~40%
  • GPU clock: 1278 MHz
  • VRAM clock: 3505 MHz
  • GPU temp: 69–77°C
  • GPU power: ~176W

The behavior is weird because some games run fine, others crash randomly.

ChatGPT suggested that the most likely cause (~80%) is corrupted/unstable Nvidia drivers due to:

  • Previous GPU crash
  • Failed driver update
  • Unstable overclock

And recommended doing a clean driver reinstall using DDU:

Steps they gave me:

  1. Download DDU
  2. Boot into Safe Mode
  3. Remove Nvidia drivers + PhysX
  4. Reboot normally
  5. Install latest Nvidia Game Ready drivers (avoid Studio version)

Does this make sense to you all, or should I look into something else?
Could it be PSU, VRAM, or dying GPU?

Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!
