Delidding Gone Wrong, Any Help is Appreciated

Help Request - CPU

The title is self explanatory.

I don’t really have time to feel sorry for myself or to grieve.

Here’s the TLDR: I posted about needing help with overclocking my i7 4790K and some people pointed to throttling issues. Considering the main reason I settled for this older CPU was overclocking potential, delidding seemed like the best path forward.

Fast forward to now, my attempt at delidding has gone wrong.

I decided to test regardless and thankfully(?), it posted. The first time around, I heard a constant almost scraping like noise. I cut power and refitted the water cooler and it posted, but this time with no noise.

However, the CPU temps keep steadily rising in the BIOS even with the fans at max speed. I tried lowering the core voltage to around 0.88v, but it still kept rising. Motherboard remained cool at 32C. I killed power once the CPU reached 69C.

Anyway, I have questions for anyone with overclocking experience:

  • Is it normal the CPU to keep rising in temperature even if a small amount of thermal paste is applied to the actual die and IHS?

  • Is it worth trying to run this CPU long-term (granted that I resolve other potential instability issues)?
