I don’t know what to do concerning my best friend
Hi, everyone! First time posting on Reddit here, so be forgiving with me (also, first language isn’t a English, so please excuse any mistakes that you see 🙏🏽)
So I’m a student in college, first year. I decided to move away from my hometown for college after graduating from high school, because I thought that the college I’m at would challenge me more, and offered a program that’s more as cancer than the ones given in my hometown. I have two friends at school right now (my roommate and a girl from my high school) my childhood friend and two other friends going to other colleges in the city where I now live.
Clarification though : I’m only 2h30 from my hometown, 3h at most with traffic, so I’ve tried to go back every other week, but obviously, that’s not always possible, especially with the finals coming soon.
To be quite honest, I’m not very good at making friends. I haven’t managed to make any other friends at school (and trust me, I’ve tried) and I didn’t have a lot of friends back in my hometown too. I think I’m a bit socially awkward; long story short, I think that stems from the bullying I’ve been through as a child and the difficult relationships I’ve had with some friends over the years, where people would unconsciously take advantage of me. I don’t think I’ve quite made my peace with all that, but that’s another story.
Thing is, last year of high school, I made one friend, and we became best friends very quickly. To my eyes, it was almost like having a sister. And I was sure that it would last forever. But since the beginning of the session, I’ve noticed that I’m pretty much the only who texts first, or who suggests to call. To be clear, she’s very school-focused, and she’s always prioritised her studies over pretty much anything else, which is completely valid. However, I feel like maybe sometimes she doesn’t put in the effort, but I’m probably wrong, so that’s why I’m asking.
A few details now : she’s had a situationship with the one guy for a while now, and they’ve decided to get together, but only after the finals, because she doesn’t want to be distracted. For the past few weeks, she’s been telling me about how sometimes, they would just call in the middle of the night and speak all night (literally). How they talk about anything and everything, but that’s not what is making me feel this way. Almost the fact that every time I ask her if she’ll have time to call, she tells me she’s too busy to do anything to study, but then finds the time to call him for seven hours straight on a Friday night? Again, I know I sound very jealous, so that’s why I’m on Reddit asking all of you. Also, she says she’s too busy to call or text a lots yet she’s managed to go out with friends at least once a week for the past four weeks (when she’s kept telling me that the school work was too much to afford a phone call).
I don’t know, maybe it’s a flawed point of view, but if you have time to spend time with your friends (not to study, really just to have fun), you could find the time to call your best friend who’s in a new city, with barely any friends that she can regularly see, who hasn’t been able to go back home for the past month now, no? I don’t know.
Also, no, I can’t really see her when I go back home, because although we did go to the same high school, she lives at about 45 minutes in the middle of a forest, so bussing there isn’t really an option when my parents can’t bring because of their busy work.
I know she’s very busy, but I feel like I am too, you know? I’m completely independent: I live by myself (with my roommate of course), do my own groceries, cook all my meals by myself, take care of my room, do my laundry, move around the city by myself, sometimes assist in dance classes for children. And yet, I still find the time during the week when she tells me that maybe she’ll be free. It’s not like I’m not busy, you know?
So here we are. I’m just wondering if just hoping we’d call at least once a week is too much and that I’m excepting too much, or if maybe it’s something that should be discussed. I know I’m taking it very seriously, but she’s just my closest friend, she was there during hard times, I was there for her when she was going through some stuff. And I think because of the way my friendships have gone in the past, I’m just very attached and treating us as a relationship and not just a friendship (which may be a wrong thing to do).
Anyways, I need your advice on this. Should I do anything? Or are my expectations just completely over the top?
