If I use hot iron or wet towel to fix bowed wood, does it go back to being bowed after it dries?

Help

I have a long piece of wood intended for a shelf that's slightly bowed, unfortunately this is my first time doing woodworking and I can't quite get to installing it in a few weeks. I've been seeing some fixes either applying steam and heat with iron to the concave side, or just applying moisture to the concave side and let sit, and seems to straighten the wood really quick. But I never see anyone mention what happens after the applied moisture is dried, does the wood go back to being bowed?

Thanks!
