I start cross training tomorrow
For a brief back story, I have been in the vet field for roughly 5 years. My first position was kennel/vet assistant. I worked for an abusive doctor and only last 3 months before I quit (which was the average employee turnover rate, some lasted even shorter periods).
I then worked at another practice for 1+ years, as receptionist, but it became quite toxic, and I was promised a cross train to full transition into vet tech. Surprise surprise, it didn’t happen and I just stopped asking after awhile.
I now work at a clinic I have been at a little over a year and I have my first shadow/cross train day tomorrow. I am rusty as I have not used any of my very basic skills much over the last few years, and I’m basically a newbie, which they know. During the discussion I was basically told this is it and kind of hinted I may not have a job if I fail and they replace my reception position, which automatically made me anxious but I understand. Also stated the Dr. has said no numerous times because I “didn’t seem like the right fit for tech here” which I wasn’t sure how to take since they decided to give me a shot now(?) but I’m trying to push that to the back of my mind. Also I would like to add I tech train tomorrow, then full tech assistant the rest of the month starting Monday.
Upon further discussion manager clarified I will be tech assistant, and that’s fine by me until I build more skill/experience.
I have only done 1 blood draw a couple months ago on a coworkers dog & got it first poke, which let’s be real, it was probably beginners luck lol. He is also a very nonchalant dog.
I’m hoping for any tips or CE recommendations to keep in mind as I get my bearings tomorrow. Thankfully the tech training me is 20+ year veteran tech and we have a great working relationship, and she seems happy to have me in the back.
Any advice/guidance appreciated. This is longer than I meant lol
TLDR 5y vet experience, mostly reception. Tech training tomorrow, looking for advice or CE content to consider on first day as “newbie”.
