Am I Overreacting If I Have My Mother Put In An Involuntary Psych Hold?

Am I Overreacting?

I apologize in advance for formatting as I’m on mobile, and any spelling mistakes are because English is my first language but I’m American and our education system sucks. lol

I (33F) don’t have the greatest relationship with my mother (52F).

Backstory for context: My mom is an addict and has several mental disorders. She used to be a highly functional person who could hold a job just fine. I wouldn’t put her anywhere near mother of the year, but I’m alive I guess. So, there’s that. A few years ago she had a mental break and I went no contact with her for the safety of myself and my children. If you need more details I will reply in the comments.

Current situation: I don’t change my number because I have to see a lot of specialists for one of my children and it would be a bigger hassle to update my number everywhere vs blocking my mom any time she reaches out. Well, she contacted me again recently and she’s homeless. She got an old prepaid phone from someone and uses public WiFi to text through an app. She’s back in our hometown (a small, out of the way town, in the middle of nowhere in a farming state) and living on park benches near the woods. She was saying she is part of some secret CIA operation and they are out to get her. Honestly, the conversation was hard to follow.

I know she’s most likely suffering with psychosis and she doesn’t need to be living out in the cold. I can’t have her live with me because she is a danger to my kids, and no one else in the family wants anything to do with her. She has burned many bridges over the years. As much as I don’t want anything to do with her, she’s still my mom and I worry about her. I’ve had several people from my hometown reach out to me to tell me they see her talking to herself and acting erratically.

Would I be overreacting if I went to the courthouse back in my hometown (in a different state) to start the process to have her put in an involuntary psych hold? I don’t want to take her autonomy from her, but at the same time I think her mind has done that for her and she’d be safer somewhere where she can be properly cared for and watched.

Also, just to add, a family member or police officer has to be the one to start the process where she is. The local police where she is don’t do anything when it comes to mental health. She burned down a house (no one was in it) during her first mental break and texted me saying she did it and why. I gave the messages to the detective in charge of the case and because I made it known she was delusional (actively hallucinating) he claimed it was an accidental fire and no one’s fault. I tried to have her arrested so she’d get help. They uno reversed me.

UPDATE

After reading comments I realized it would be the best thing for my mom to have her evaluated and go from there. I’ll be putting a folder together with all of our messages over the years showing the decline of her mental state, messages from others who have updated me on her whereabouts and actions, and any hospital records I may have kept. (Though those are probably long gone by now) I will be going to my hometown soon to at least get her evaluated. From there I’ll discuss with hospital staff about recommendations for a longer commitment or what the next steps should be, as well as reaching out to a mental health advocate.

Thank you all for letting me know I’m not overreacting by wanting to do this. I really was doubting myself thinking I’d be a horrible person for not caring for her myself. All of your kind words have shown me this is the best path while keeping my kids safe too. I’ll update again when I’m able to get her seen.
