Are meetings after 10pm a thing ?
I work in an “international” small company where I lead a department. Aside from me, all the managers are Japanese. And 80% of the workforce are foreigners. I work from home about 90% of the time, and on the days I go to the office I leave before 7pm
This seems to be the case for all non-Japanese staff, but the Japanese employees regularly stay at the office until the last train — even when there’s absolutely no need to.
Today, they asked me to come to the office for a meeting about a new feature we’re implementing. The available times? Monday after 10 p.m. or Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Guess which one I picked?
Am I losing my mind, or is this normal? Do they really have nothing better to do than stay in the office all night? (I know they don’t)
It blows my mind that they see this as acceptable. We’re not facing a deadline. The year is ending with multiple awards, great results, and even more investment.
So why are they scheduling a meeting after 10 p.m.?
Every time something like this happens, I wonder whether I should change jobs. But is this just how things are here? Is this kind of behavior actually normal in Japan?
