What should I do?
I’m looking for some advice.
I’ve been a hairstylist for 15 years, and I’m ready for a career change. I have an associate’s degree in business, and in the salon world I’ve always held leadership roles, management, training, inventory, hiring, payroll, and all the backend operational work.
This season has been really rough financially. My income has been so inconsistent, and after all these years in hair, I’ve never struggled this much. In addition, I’m starting to get carpal tunnel and shoulder problems. I’m at a point where I need something with benefits, steady pay, and room to grow.
The issue is: I have no idea where to start. I’m not sure which companies to look at or what roles would be a good entry-level fit. I also feel intimidated by the idea of a corporate environment or sitting at a desk all day, even though I’d absolutely do it if it meant stability. Part of me wants something in a school admin/front desk which might be a good transition, since I could still do some hair on weekends or during breaks.
I also keep going back and forth on returning to school. I’m interested in sonography/ultrasound or nursing. I only need 1 prerequisite for sonography or 3 for nursing before applying. But I struggle with the idea of loans and how I’d juggle school, work, and being the primary caregiver for my kids, especially since the programs are basically full-time.
I would really appreciate any input from women who’ve been in this position? jobs to explore, companies to look into, or any advice at all. Thank you so much
