Need Advice on 68W in the Reserves vs National Guard
I’m a paramedic in Miami, Florida and I’m looking to enlist as a 68W (Combat Medic). I scored well on the ASVAB and qualify for the job, but I’m getting a lot of mixed advice about whether I should go Army Reserve or National Guard.
I want to get some real insight from current or former 68Ws.
What I’m looking for: • I do want to deploy at least once. • I want a fast-paced medical environment (IVs, fieldwork, aid stations, trauma lanes, etc.). • I just don’t want to be in a frontline infantry role where I’m getting shot at constantly. • I’m totally fine with being stationed in Puerto Rico for the Reserves since I have family there.
My main questions: 1. What is the day-to-day and deployment experience like for 68Ws in the Army Reserve? Are deployments usually clinic/hospital style or do medics often end up with infantry units? 2. Is the National Guard more hands-on for medics? People say Guard 68Ws get more field experience, but does that also mean they’re more likely to be in combat situations? 3. Unit availability: As far as I’ve been told, there are no Reserve 68W slots in Miami, only in Puerto Rico. For those familiar with this area — is it better to wait for a medical-support unit, or is Guard the better option for real experience? I haven’t spoken to a guard recruiter yet but will soon.
What I want out of this:
Practical medical work, one solid deployment, and the ability to continue my fire/EMS career without being pushed into heavy combat roles.
Thanks for any advice I really want to make the right call before I sign anything.
