Which would you rather get as a gift, a sword, a big crystal, or nothing?

Someone on Reddit recently told me "everyone wants either a sword or a giant crystal" as a gift, and I can't find a flaw in the logic. So tell me, should I buy my entire family swords for Christmas or what?
