Open Source Data Stack for Drones, Sensors, and Visiom inference (mavlink) and vis
Hey everyone,
I’m new to Drone tech / diy but come from a solution architect and cloud engineering background and started an open source project focused on mavlink and drone cameras.
Constellation Overwatch is a lightweight (~30 MB), completely offline-first, open-source C4ISR stack built with intention for people who actually fly drones and robots in the real world (industrial sites, search & rescue, defense, research, etc.) still have a ways to go but help move this data efficiently and rapidly.
Core ideas:
-
One binary with embedded NATS JetStream + Turso SQLite + Go backend
-
Ontological global state (entity_id namespacing) so every drone, ground robot, sensor, or camera has its own clean signal tree and state
-
Real-time dashboard over Server-Sent Events (no Electron bloat)
-
Full bearer-token API and NATS auth – works air-gapped or globally clustered
-
Designed from the ground up for edge proximity and data residency
Current working integrations (both also open source):
-
mavlink2constellation – high-performance MAVLink v2 → NATS bridge (gomavlib under the hood).
-
vision2constellation – zero-copy video inference at the edge. Ships with C4ISR-tuned YOLO-E, RT-DETR, SAM2 segmentation, and Moondream VLM. Streams annotated frames + detections straight to the same global state fabric.

Would love to hear from anyone who:
-
Runs more than a handful of drones/robots at once
-
Has experience with gomavlib, mvp2p, mesh networks, etc.
-
Just wants a simple self-hosted alternative to the big commercial fleet platforms
Feedback, bug reports, and contributions all very welcome.
Thanks!
