6 Months to Cure

Success Story

Hi all, I finally got around to getting my TOC last week and it came back all negative! This sub was a massive help in not just figuring out what the heck was wrong with me but also what to expect with treatment. So, I figured I might as well give a few details of what I experienced in case it helps anyone out who’s getting started with dealing with this like I was.

My symptoms were as follows •Occasional burning when urinating (most common in the mornings) •A clear or sometimes white discharge that would come and go throughout the day •Clear strings of mucus in my urine They all started out pretty small and not noticeable and began to ramp up to being things I’d have to deal with every day. Not exactly impossible to live with, but definitely gross and uncomfortable.

The whole process took my about 6 months from first noticing it to treatment, with me first noticing symptoms in June. Unfortunately this extended timeframe is because most doctors really don’t have any clue when it comes to MGen, which seems to be a common point on this sub.

I had to meet with a substitute doctor for my GP since he was out and she brushed off my symptoms after testing me for the usual STIs saying basically “well, it’s not chlamydia or gonorrhea, so you don’t have to worry about it” with no follow up. I had to wait for my GP to get back and met with him in which he also had no idea what it could be and tested for a possible UTI which also turned up with nothing. Out of leads he initially wanted to schedule me for a cystoscopy, which was obviously unneeded for what I was dealing with, so I sort of demanded he refer me to a urologist before doing anything like that. From there the Urologist tested me for MGen since he recognized the symptoms and immediately put me on Doxy/Moxi to cure it. While I was hesitant to immediately take such strong antibiotics, I didn’t argue with him since I just wanted to be cured as by this point it had been 4 months since it all started.

While some people on here report pretty bad side effects from Moxi, I was lucky enough that I didn’t experience anything major. In fact, the Doxy had more side effects for me as with the last couple doses I would get bad nausea after taking them. For Moxi the worst I had was a bit of numbness in my leg that went away after an hour or so, which I kinda chalk up to my anxiety about the drug making it more noticeable. But definitely be your own advocate and reach out to a doctor if you feel like anything seriously wrong is happening to you.

I also ended up starting my dose of Moxi 2 days late since my doctor had filled the prescription for it after I started Doxy and I somehow forgot about it. Even though I started late, I guess Doxy kicks around in your system for a while and the treatment still worked as planned. My symptoms also cleared up pretty fast with all of them going away by the time I’d finished just the Doxy.

The reason I took a while to get a TOC was because the CDC guidelines for MGen actually says you don’t need a TOC if the symptoms don’t come back and you should just assume you’re cured. My urologist told me this and so I put off getting a TOC after completing my treatment back in October. Eventually my anxiety about it got the best of me however and my urologist let me take one (this was over a month later in November), and sure enough it came up all negative, finally putting an end to this frustrating situation.

I believe that’s all there is to say about it! If anyone has any questions, I’ll be happy to answer. And if you’re also going through this, the best advice I can say is to be your own advocate. You need to speak for yourself and if you feel there’s something wrong with you, speak with your doctor and demand that they do more for you since this is your health and nobody knows you better than yourself.
