You don’t need another indicator. You don’t need a new strategy. According to Jared Tendler, author of The Mental Game of Trading, most traders fail not because their edge sucks, but because their mind malfunctions under pressure. You’re not losing because you’re dumb or lazy. You’re losing because your emotional system is hijacking the part of your brain that makes good decisions.

Jared explains this with the Yerkes-Dodson curve the link between emotion and performance. Too little emotion and you feel flat, tired, disconnected from the market. Too much emotion and your brain starts shutting down your decision-making, planning, and patience. In the middle is your zone: clear, focused, steady. The goal isn’t to be emotionless. The goal is to live as close to that middle as possible, for as long as possible.

The slide out of the zone is gradual. You miss an entry by a tick. You get wicked out before target. You sit through chop. Each event quietly pushes your emotional level higher. At some point you hit that ugly spot where you know you’re acting stupid, but you still click. That’s the malfunctioning mind. Awareness is there. Control is gone. That’s where revenge trading, overtrading, and turning a small red day into a disaster actually happen.

What makes it worse is emotional carryover. Yesterday’s tilt doesn’t disappear because you slept and told yourself “new day.” It becomes accumulated emotion. Your baseline is already elevated when you sit down, so it takes almost nothing to push you into frustration or FOMO. The only real way to clear that backlog is journaling, writing down what triggered you, how your thoughts changed, and when your execution slipped. It’s a mental cool-down. Skip it enough times and your brain stays clogged, even if your body feels fine.

Jared also breaks down working memory, the small mental “desk” you use to process the market. In the zone, that desk feels big and clean. You see context, timing, risk, and structure all at once. As emotions rise, that desk shrinks. Part of it gets filled with emotional noise like “I have to make it back.” Another part gets used trying to calm yourself down. That’s when you start forcing trades, promoting C-setups to A-setups, and ignoring obvious warnings. You didn’t suddenly become stupid. You just ran out of mental space.

One of his biggest points: most “discipline problems” are really emotional problems. You don’t randomly forget your rules. Your emotions surge past the point where discipline is accessible. On top of that, every decision has emotional EV, not just R-multiple. When you’re off your game, the upside of “one more trade” is tiny. The downside is a full emotional spiral that can wreck a week. Sometimes the best trade you’ll ever take is closing the platform before your mind goes off the cliff.

The edge isn’t just your setup. It’s your ability to keep your brain in a usable state while that setup plays out over hundreds of trades. When you start studying your own triggers, building a clear “zone map,” and treating journaling as non-negotiable maintenance, you stop nuking good weeks and start building consistency that actually sticks.
