Award Amounts?

I know this is likely a dumb question, but I am looking at transferring points over to Aeroplan in order to book an award travel… I am used to flights showing the cost as the round-trip amount, and not for each direction. Does Aeroplan use the total or if I see that the outbound leg is 40 K points and the return leg is 40 K points… Does that mean it is 80 K points, or is the 40 K for the round-trip? I don’t want to transfer points and then have them stuck in Aeroplan if it is more than I want to spend. Thank you so much for any information.
