Startup firm vs. Big firm vs. Private company for internship — working student here, need advice

Question

Hi everyone,

I’m currently conflicted about where to apply for my accounting internship and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

My mom (she’s a senior CPA) told me that interning in a smaller firm is usually more hands-on. You get exposed to more areas and you’re not boxed into just one task. But if you intern in a big firm, you might end up doing only one specific function like AP or audit support. I trust her judgment, but I also want to hear from people who have been through this recently. How true is this?

Compensation is also a pretty big factor for me. I prefer a company or firm that gives a decent allowance. I’m not ashamed to say it. I know deep down everyone appreciates good pay, even if they don’t say it out loud.

I’m also considering interning at a private company mainly because the allowance might be better.

For context:

I’m a working student and I currently work part-time.

I don’t receive allowance from my parents anymore.

I support myself (food, daily expenses, etc.).

Doing an internship means I’ll have to leave my part-time job, so you can imagine why compensation matters a lot to me.

Of course, experience is still the priority, but realistically, I can’t ignore the financial side.

For those who’ve interned in small firms, big firms, or private companies in the PH — what was your experience like?

Which one gave you the best learning?

Which one compensated you the best?

If you were in my position (working student, about to let go of a part-time job), what would you choose?

Would really appreciate everyone’s insights. Thanks in advance!
