100% of weed whacker string ends up as tiny bits of plastic scattered around lawns and gardens

Title. Seems like an obvious source of microplastics in the environment that I never thought of until I walked down the string trimmer aisle at Home Depot and saw the dozens of packs of string, all of which will be deposited in the landscape. Does this accumulate over time in any noticeable way? Do small animals take it up and then pass it up the food chain?
