MAGA isn’t a movement. It’s a symptom of 40 years of letting public education rot while feeding people algorithmic outrage and straight-up fake news.
A functioning democratic republic only works when voters can A. read a bill or a crime statistic, B. spot obvious bullshit, and C. change their mind when the evidence demands it. We have lost large parts of all three, and the result is an electorate that genuinely believes things like:
Tariffs are paid by China, not American consumers
Millions of illegals voted in 2020
Crime is at an all-time high (violent crime in
2024-2025 is down around 15 % from 2020)
The government can just print money with no consequences
Here are what I think are the three big culprits, with sources.
Public education has collapsed on the exact skills needed for citizenship and this is based on data from the 2024 Nation’s Report Card. Only 26% of 12th graders are proficient in reading, which is the lowest since they started tracking it. https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/highlights/ltt/2024/
Public satisfaction with K-12 education hit a record low 35 % in 2025.

Classic 1996 research which is still the best out there shows civic knowledge directly predicts ability to resist manipulation. Lower education equals weaker grasp of how government actually works. Per Delli Carpini & Keeter, “What Americans Know about Politics and Why It Matters”
- Social media echo chambers are real and worse on the right.
Full 100 % partisan bubbles are rare, but right-leaning networks are significantly denser and more isolated. People self sort and algorithms reward outrage, turning mild views into radical ones.
This is based on Reuters Institute 2022 literature review + multiple 2020-2024 Twitter/X studies such as Bakshy, Nyhan, and Reifler.
- Misinformation vulnerability is sharply asymmetric. Conservatives share and fall for false stories at much higher rates than liberals. This is not a both sides thing; the correlation is stronger and the effect size is larger on the right. This is from the Harvard Misinformation Review of 2021 meta-analysis and their 2023-2024 follow-ups. As an example, 55-70% of Republicans still believe the 2020 election was stolen or fraudulent based on polls from this and last year like Monmouth, PRRI, and YouGov. Every single court case and audit says otherwise.
Put those together and you get debates where right leanining, religious and maga supporters on call-in to streams like Destiny, Dean Withers, The Line, etc, where the same pattern repeats:
- Caller makes confident claim
- Host reads the actual law/statistic/source
- Caller either denies reality, moves goalposts, or says “I’ll have to look into that” and you never hear from them again
That’s not stupidity. That’s a population that was never taught how to tell fact from fiction, then got locked in pipelines that punish admitting error.
Until we admit that a huge slice of Trump voters are not misinformed they are civically and statistically functionally illiterate through no fault of their own, we will keep losing. Shaming them doesn’t work. Economic anxiety hand-waving doesn’t explain the data. The fix starts with massive investment in public schools and mandatory media-literacy education.
TL;DR: MAGA dominates because decades of starving public education + algorithmic bubbles + lopsided right-wing disinformation created an electorate that literally cannot tell what’s real anymore. Fix schools or watch the republic keep sliding.
