Finally settled on a Soldier for character. The exploits for a Soldier (and most Backgrounds in general) seem a “bit much” for level 1 character. Does this work around make sense for a 5e D&D character?
Would it make sense the character was given accolades for being the sole survivor of an enemy raid, and is responsible for killing an enemy general, but as the direct result of pretended to be dead the moment the horns blared. The character is obviously not going to correct anyone about how this character “bravely hunted down the general out of sense of duty to the state and revenge for their comrades.” The character sprung out of the body pile when enemy general noticed they were still alive and flailed a sword about.
Was given leave to clear their head, in the meantime, without any real marketable skills, no artisan tool prof, no extended family with deep pockets, the character now adventures.
