BArts or BCommerce for an 80+ WAM?

Admission and Transferring

I’m a Chem Eng (Hons) graduate working full-time, planning to do a second undergrad purely to get a high WAM for MD pathways. I don’t need the degree for career reasons — just the GPA.

I didn’t enjoy my Engineering degree at Monash so my engineering marks weren’t great, but I still did well in Chemistry/Math and even got a 94 in a Marketing elective. So I’m comfortable with quantitative/qualititative subjects.

I’ve seen a lot of posts saying Arts is hard to maintain an 80+ WAM because of subjective marking. I’m considering doing a single major (likely Media & Communications) and stacking the rest with as many easier electives/WAM boosters as I can. If I structure the degree that way, is it still realistically hard to maintain an 80+?

Commerce is my other option (probably Finance), but I’ve also seen people say Commerce at UniMelb is competitive, curved and quite exam-heavy. I’m worried the lack of flexibility might make it harder to hit the WAM I need, even if the marking is more “objective.”

I’m not trying to treat Arts or Commerce as an “easy way out” — I’m just turning 29, will continue working as an engineer (hence, looking for a more flexible degree), and want to be realistic about whether a near-perfect GPA is achievable before committing to this path.

Would really appreciate insight from anyone who’s done Arts or Commerce!

Thank you!!
